Monfalconelettrica is a cultural and research-based digital project dedicated to the interpretation of the historical relationship between energy, industry and territorial transformation in the Monfalconese area, in Friuli Venezia Giulia, north-eastern Italy. Conceived as a long-term platform for documentation, analysis and public dissemination, the project examines the ways in which infrastructures, productive systems and technological change have contributed to shaping the physical and cultural identity of this territory.
Situated within a landscape marked by the close interaction of waterways, port functions, industrial settlements, transport routes and agrarian organisation, the Monfalconese offers an especially significant case for understanding how energy has acted not only as a technical resource, but as a structural principle in the making of the modern territory. Monfalconelettrica proceeds from this assumption and develops it through a coherent interpretive framework in which places, networks, industrial sites and historical processes are read in relation to one another.
The project therefore proposes a broad territorial reading, one capable of reconnecting industrial history, landscape history, archaeology, local memory and the material evidence of transformation across time.
Mission and scope
Monfalconelettrica was established with the aim of making a complex and stratified territorial history more legible through an informed, rigorous and accessible form of public interpretation. Its purpose is not limited to recording industrial or energy-related facts, but extends to reconstructing the broader historical logic through which Monfalcone and its surrounding area developed as a productive, infrastructural and strategic landscape within the Upper Adriatic.
The project brings into focus the long durée of territorial change. It considers the historical formation of the area, the emergence of industrial systems, the growth of energy infrastructures, the reorganisation of land and water, and the progressive transformation of Monfalcone into a node of technical, economic and logistical significance. In doing so, it seeks to return not a fragmentary picture, but a connected one, in which energy and industry are understood as forces embedded in the wider life of the territory.
Research approach
Monfalconelettrica adopts an interdisciplinary method grounded in historical research, industrial archaeology, territorial observation and digital communication. Its work is informed by archival materials, scholarly publications, historical cartography, iconographic sources, technical documentation and the direct reading of sites and landscapes.
Particular attention is devoted to the material dimension of transformation. Industrial plants, canals, port areas, transport corridors, reclamation systems, productive districts and infrastructural networks are approached not as isolated objects, but as elements within a broader historical system. This method allows the project to move beyond descriptive inventory and towards an interpretive reconstruction of the territory as an organised and evolving whole.
At the same time, Monfalconelettrica places great importance on dissemination. Research is translated into forms of communication that remain intellectually serious while also being open to wider audiences, including local communities, students, visitors, institutions and scholars.
Thematic structure
The project is articulated through a set of thematic and chronological sections designed to accompany readers through the principal stages and structures of territorial development.
History of a Territory introduces the geographical, environmental and historical conditions that underpin the formation of the Monfalconese as a distinct space of settlement, movement and productive activity.
From Venice to Austria examines the institutional and political frameworks that shaped the region before and during the transition towards modern economic and territorial reorganisation.
An Industrial Periphery for Trieste considers the relationship between Monfalcone and the broader Adriatic and Triestine sphere, highlighting the role of the area within wider circuits of production, exchange and infrastructure.
Continuous Industrialisation follows the gradual consolidation of industrial functions, technical systems and productive landscapes from the nineteenth century onwards.
Monfalcone Elettrica addresses more directly the history of electrical production, transmission and territorial impact, identifying energy as one of the key interpretive threads of the modern landscape.
Today, Looking Ahead opens the project towards the present and the future, inviting reflection on how this historical inheritance continues to inform the identity and perception of the territory today.
Alongside these sections, Monfalconelettrica also develops thematic pathways dedicated to landscape, networks, infrastructures, labour, key figures and territorial structures, thereby offering a plurality of possible readings without losing overall coherence.
A territorial case of broader significance
Although firmly rooted in a specific portion of north-eastern Italy, Monfalconelettrica addresses questions of wider cultural and scholarly relevance. Among them are the relationship between infrastructure and landscape, the role of energy in territorial modernisation, the interpretation of industrial heritage, the material history of production, and the continuing significance of industrial districts in contemporary regional identity.
The project is therefore local in scale, but not local in ambition. Its territorial focus provides the necessary concreteness through which broader historical processes may be observed with precision. In this respect, the Monfalconese becomes more than a local subject: it becomes a particularly instructive case through which larger transformations of the modern world may be read.
Public value
Monfalconelettrica is intended as a tool of cultural restitution. It aims to return to the public a territory that is often perceived in fragmentary terms, restoring instead the depth of its historical construction and the density of its material traces. By doing so, it contributes to a more conscious understanding of places that have long been shaped by work, technology, mobility and industrial change.
Its value lies precisely in this capacity to reconnect what is often separated: technical history and cultural history, industrial evidence and landscape form, local memory and historical interpretation, specialised knowledge and public access.
Explore the project
Monfalconelettrica invites readers to explore the Monfalconese through essays, thematic sections and interpretive materials that illuminate the many layers of its territorial development. What emerges is the portrait of a landscape shaped over time by infrastructures, productive systems, hydraulic organisation, industrial settlement and energy-related transformation.
Rather than treating energy as a narrow technical theme, the project proposes it as a historical key through which the wider development of the territory may be understood with greater clarity and depth.
Contact
Monfalconelettrica is open to research dialogue, institutional collaboration, educational initiatives, exhibitions and cultural projects related to the history of energy, industry and territorial transformation.
